Preparing OPIc Exam

2020. 9. 22. 20:47English/Diary

I have a OPIc test tomorrow which is obreviation of Oral Proficiency Interview, computer. So I get nerveous now because this one is the first exam of my entire life except the TOEIC test what I got tested when I 15 that I rarely remember. The reason I decide to test OPIc is quite funny. I have a friend who is looking for programming job like develop web service like me, when I get an advice for my cv letter and resume, he told me I should have a official English certificate, like TOEIC or TOPIC so I asked him what I should do. He recommend what he is getting to, that was the OPIc test. so I suddenly get ready for it.

To be honest, I have no idea how should I start the study OPIc, but I have a quite nice habit whatever I look for I always search that on Youtube, so I searched it and finally find one Youtuber. The Youtube channel was 'opicnojam' which means 'OPIc is not funny'. It's ridiculous becaues he is actually teaching OPIc skills. I was totally interested to him.

the first impression was like 'he must be crazy' because of his acting like a clown. he just frown his face whenever he say. So I'm repulsed at very first time, but what his teaching and information of the test is quite impressed. So here is the summary what he emphasizes.

The main stream of the test is making a main point. This is called MP. There's four different kind of subject, Description, Habit, Past experience and Comparison.

Let's start with description. The point of description on test is just focus on the describe. it means, do not list the fact, fact, fact but pick one of them and describe how I feel about that and why I feel like that. Super easy right? (I'm not kind of conceited person, I'm trying to be confidence.. )

Habit is simmilar with desciprtion but we have to focus on 'behavior'. Habit question inquire what I do usually, or what I do first thing when specific situation. For example, what do you usually do when you go to the bank? it seems quite tough question unless we didn't ready for it, but there are format to answer to this type of question. It start with this expression 'well, here's the thing, no matter what, whenever I go to __ I always make sure to bring __' or 'I'll tell you what, at the __, I take out my __' and to connect this expression, try this. 'this is crucial because ___' or 'you know whenever I'm at the bank ..' and after use the expression you have to tell what I tried to use the topic (MP). If you concern the answer is too much short, try 'quick comparison' strategy which is telling a past experience and turn back to present immediately.

When you are asked for Past experience, you have to focus the past tense grammar, the other points are simmilar with Description type question. you should make a main point. The most important thing to do is that you have to place your conclusion at first of your story. We all studied the stories have four steps of composition. (introduction - development - turn and conclustion) but when you are being tested, we don't have much time and the tester must be tired if you focus consecutively to find the conclusion. So keep in mind the conclusion have to be placed at first.

Comparison has two types, time and non-time, if you have comparison question along time, you should focus on just pure present. Here's example, if the question is asking comparison about music preference, you can say 'I love K-pop music nowadays.. because..' than you explain why you like Kpop music. if you stuck on your short English or vocabulary, then you can use 'quick comparison' just mention what you liked before, and go back into the present again. If you get comparison question without time, it's gonna simple. This kind of question is like this 'compare two different singer you like'. You can metion two singer's name and pick one you like and explain why I love the musician till the end.

If you decide to conclude your story, try these four expressions. 'That's about it', 'That's pretty much it', 'That's pretty much all I have to say', 'That's all I'm gonna say'

And the last one more thing, 'I gotta tell you' sounds naturally much than 'I have to tell you'.

Hope you guys and me have a great score in OPIc test.

That's about it!
